Gieseking

Play 30s sample:

During the 1930's, Walter Gieseking (above) recorded all twelve preludes from Debussy's First Book of Preludes, composed in 1910. Of these, his performance of the tenth, La Cathédrale Engloutie (The Submerged Cathedral) is a particular favourite here at Pristine Audio.

Taken from both sides of a ten-inch US pressing, we have managed to extract a remarkable dynamic range, from the quietest pianissimo, almost vanishing into the background, up to a grand, striking fortissimo in the central section. Rightly starred in the 1952 Record Guide, this is a real gem!
