Herbert
von Karajan's long association with the Vienna Philharmonic dates
back to 21st August, 1934, when he first conducted them in a performance
in Salzburg. Some five hundred or so concerts later, he made his final
stage appearance with the orchestra, and his last ever conducting appearance
in Vienna on 23rd April, 1989, some fifty-five years later.
In
this recording, almost contemporaneous with the photograph (above),
which shows von Karajan at the baton with the Vienna Philharmonic in December
1947, we find him exploring the depths of one of Mozart's most
religiously sensitive pieces, the moving Masonic Funeral Music.
Written in 1885, this is a solemn chorale or march, imbued with the spirit
of earnestness and resignation, which Karajan takes with great sensitivity.
